About the Insight App
Table of Contents:
1. What is Insight?
The Insight App is a new web tool that enhances your reading experience at almost any website.
It allows you and other readers to interact with almost any text on the page in various ways:
- Give quick feedback on specific parts of a page - with just a few clicks of your mouse
- Annotate a key phrase by asking a question
- Annotate a key phrase by adding concise commentary, called an "Insight", right in-context
- Rate key phrases for their accuracy, agreeability, and importance.
Get the best ideas, no matter where they come from
Insight scans the content on a page, and if it recognizes a popular phrase or quote, it pulls in ratings and comments from other Insight users all over the web. If someone at a different site is reading the same quote and knows something great about it - you'll see it without having to go search for it!
But, we only show the top-rated ideas, which your ratings help our sorting algorithms find. You won't have to read ALL of the commentary online, just the best commentary.

3. Why did we build Insight?
In the beginning...
Insight began as a humble email newsletter, focused on politics, sent to the inboxes of our founder's family and friends. It was designed to present credible, bipartisan information in a really concise and easy-to-read format, so people could learn more about important topics despite their busy schedules. This led to creating Ameritocracy.com, a site for anyone to fact-check, rate, and discuss key statements from politicians, elected officials, and other organizations.
Ultimately, we decided we wanted a way to rate and comment on specific parts of articles about almost anything we cared about - politics, sports, our favorite food - and to do so right on the web sites we're already reading - and this led us to make Insight.
Better than Comments
All kinds of publishers have added the ability for readers to comment to their websites; bloggers, retail stores, even major news networks. This has been a productive step towards a truly interactive web, enabling two-way communication between publishers and readers. But, it's hard to find good comments about the specific part of a web page you really care about - and who has time to hunt?
Insight, with the help of ratings from readers like you, puts the best commentary from the community right within an article.
4. How does Insight work?
The App
The Insight app sits on top of published site content, and just adds a layer of information on top of it that is visible when the app is activated. The actual content on a site isn't modified, and you can turn Insight off whenever you want.
Readers like yourself can use the app to highlight, rate, and respond to phrases on the page, or just read what other people have contributed. Since anyone can activate the app on any website they want, people from all over the world and all over the web can contribute their thoughts, and all of it will be accessible wherever you're using the app.
Phrases are also stored in our database, so if the app recognizes an exact phrase in more than one article, the content associated with that phrase will be available to people browsing both articles.
Insightapp.com
Most of the information on insightapp.com is collected by people around the web through the Insight App. The App is the easiest way to directly engage with content where you already are, but the site is a better way to view and compare how readers from different sites and communities are rating and commenting on similar content around the web.
